Which Neurotoxin is Right For Me?

Are you looking to get neurotoxin injections but aren’t sure which is best for you? You’ve come to the right place.

Here at THE MED SPA™ in Florida, we offer three of the leading brands: Botox®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN®. When clients find out our menu has options, the first thing they ask is: Which neurotoxin is best?

Well, that depends - and that’s what this blog is all about. We’ll explain the differences between Botox®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® so you can decide for yourself!

What do Botox®, Dysport®, and XEOMIN® have in common?

If you’re looking to slow down the signs of aging, all three of these neurotoxins are going to do a great job. All three of these injectables temporarily improve the appearance of both mild to severe frown lines between the eyebrows and fine lines around the eyes (crow’s feet). They smooth the skin by blocking nerve impulses and helping muscles relax.

While they’re all designed as solutions to similar skin concerns, they do have differences. All three are produced by different manufacturers and have unique formulas. This affects their longevity, dosage, application techniques, and other factors.

The First, Botox®

Bow down to the reigning queen, Botox. With an 80% market share of the injectable industry, it’s not surprising to learn that it was the first anti-wrinkle injectable on the market. It gained FDA certification in 2002. In addition to smoothing wrinkles, Botox® can also be used to treat excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis) in the armpits, hands, and feet.

Botox is formulated using a protein casing. Although its results are incredible, this casing can cause rare immune reactions. Nevertheless, new brands entered the market offering different formulas and benefits.

Lighter, Dysport®

If Queen Botox has a runner-up, it’s most certainly Dysport. Earning its FDA certification in 2009, Dysport was second to enter the game and is extremely popular and effective.

To get scientific, Dysport has a lighter molecular weight than Botox containing a smaller version of a similar protein. It’s a great solution for treating larger areas because it’s slightly less potent and diffuses (spreads) easier. However, more product is necessary to gain optimal results. The average patient uses about 20 units of Botox versus 40 units of Dysport.

The upside? Dysport results are known to show up faster than Botox. Dysport results appear within 24 hours, while Botox injections can take over 72 hours.

naked, XEOMIN®

Meet the newest neurotoxin on our list, XEOMIN. It was FDA-approved in 2011 and has thus gained popularity as the “naked” choice. Why? It only contains one ingredient: botulinum toxin type A. Without any additives, XEOMIN is the purest injectable available. As Byrdie explains,

“Xeomin is a purified form of the neurotoxin; it's manufactured in such a way that it removes accessory proteins from the active ingredient.”

Another perk? Some patients develop a resistance to Botox or Dysport due to certain antibodies so XEOMIN is a reliable alternative. It’s also less likely to spark any allergic reactions. The only downside to XEOMIN is that it can be slower to show results - up to 4 days.
